SOC 2 (System and Organization Controls 2) is an auditing framework developed by the AICPA that evaluates how a service organization manages customer data across five trust service criteria: security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy. Enterprise customers, healthcare organizations, and financial institutions commonly require SOC 2 Type II reports before signing vendor contracts. The audit process typically spans 6–12 months: the company implements and documents controls, undergoes a readiness assessment, then an independent auditor tests those controls over an observation period before issuing the report.
